By Zoila Palma: Four fishermen have been charged with fisheries offences following a joint patrol by the Belize Coast Guard and Belize Audubon Society Rangers within the Half Moon Caye Marine Protected Area.
The operation took place in the early hours of Wednesday, August 12, when personnel from the Coast Guard’s 2nd Fleet Marine Enforcement Unit and Belize Audubon Society intercepted a vessel during routine enforcement patrols. The inspection identified violations involving protected lobster stocks.
The Belize Coast Guard emphasized that enforcement efforts are critical to protecting Belize’s marine resources, particularly undersized, soft-shell and egg-bearing lobster, which are protected to ensure the sustainability of the country’s fisheries and the livelihoods that depend on them.
The Belize Coast Guard commended its Marine Enforcement Unit for its vigilance and continued presence on Belize’s waters, while also thanking Belize Audubon Society Rangers for their ongoing partnership in safeguarding the country’s marine ecosystems.
