Speednet fight spills into the streets as unions call two days of protest

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The battle over the proposed BTL acquisition of Speednet is moving from talk shows to the streets. The National Trade Union Congress of Belize, which has rejected the telecoms consolidation, has announced two days of protest action, and the second one lands right on Cabinet’s doorstep, the same day ministers are scheduled to take a final decision.

The NTUCB is first calling on all Belizeans to wear black on Friday, August 14, as a silent protest against the proposed acquisition.

Then comes the main event. On Tuesday, August 18, the NTUCB will stage a demonstration in front of the Sir Edney Cain Building in Belmopan, deliberately timed to coincide with the weekly Cabinet meeting where ministers are scheduled to make the final call on the Speednet deal.

The congress is calling on all sister unions and the general public to join both actions. According to reports, the Belize National Teachers’ Union Council of Management has agreed to protest alongside the NTUCB, though the teachers must first consult with their membership before committing.

What was a corporate question is now a civic one. Friday will show how many Belizeans reach for a black shirt. Tuesday will show how many make the trip to Belmopan, and whether Cabinet walks into its meeting past a crowd.

Breaking Belize News will follow both days of action and the Cabinet decision.
