By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 43-year-old taxi driver accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in his dollar van has had his case adjourned to August 17, 2026, while the court awaits key video evidence from law enforcement.

Wenseslao Garrido-Veilz, a Mahogany Street taxi operator, appeared before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1 where he was provided with an additional eight pages of disclosure. However, court proceedings—including setting a date for his Case Management Conference (CMC) and trial—have been put on hold due to delayed CCTV footage that police personnel have not yet prepared for disclosure.

Appearing unrepresented alongside a Spanish interpreter, Garrido-Veilz told the court he maintains an alibi defense, claiming he has time-stamped proof and a receipt showing he was elsewhere when the alleged crime occurred.

The prosecution, represented by a police Sergeant, informed the magistrate that they intend to call four witnesses during the trial.

Garrido-Veilz remains out on a $5,000 bail with two Belizean sureties of $2,500 each under strict conditions, including reporting weekly to police, surrendering travel documents, and maintaining a 200-yard distance from the complainant.

The charges stem from an incident reported to police on Saturday, November 22, 2025, by the 15-year-old victim and her mother.

According to police reports, the minor boarded a grey dollar van near the “New 2 U” store on Cemetery Road in Belize City to head home. After dropping off all other passengers, the driver allegedly detoured to a feeder road off the George Price Highway near Miles 2 and 3, where he inappropriately touched the minor. A medical examination at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) subsequently certified her injuries as harm.

Following a police investigation, Garrido-Veilz was arrested and formally charged with one count of sexual assault. During his initial arraignment on November 25, 2025, he pleaded not guilty through a Spanish interpreter before drawing attention in court by unexpectedly speaking out in Kriol and English upon receiving bail.
