By Zoila Palma: Football superstar Lionel Messi was reportedly the target of multiple serious threats during the 2026 World Cup, including an alleged plot to kill him inside a stadium, according to a police report reviewed by Spanish newspaper Marca.
The report detailed security threats investigated by U.S. authorities during the tournament, with Messi reportedly receiving more death threats than any other footballer named.
One alleged threat involved plans to enter a stadium with homemade explosives and an AR-15 rifle, while another suspect reportedly threatened to attack Messi during Argentina’s group-stage match against Jordan.
Ahead of Argentina’s match against Egypt, another suspect allegedly posted online that he planned to enter Atlanta Stadium and kill Messi using explosives.
Authorities reportedly took the threat seriously and searched the stadium with sniffer dogs, including checks of bins and other areas, but no explosives were found.
Messi was not the only football star reportedly targeted during the tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo also faced security concerns, while French referee François Letexier reportedly received more than 6,000 hate messages following the controversial Argentina-Egypt match.
