By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A young woman who bolted from the compound of the Orange Walk Police Station moments after being brought in, outrunning pursuing officers into the night, has been recaptured nearly six weeks later and formally charged with escape from lawful custody.
According to the Belize Police Department, the saga began on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at approximately 11:45 p.m., when officers on mobile patrol along Maskal Street spotted a group of women sitting inside a park on the street. Officers approached and asked each individual for her name, and in doing so, one officer recognized a young woman who was wanted in connection with a cybercrime matter.
She was informed she would be detained and taken to the Orange Walk Police Station pending charges, and was escorted to the police mobile without incident. The compliance lasted exactly as far as the station yard. Upon arrival, she was instructed to exit the mobile, which she did, and while an officer was opening the other door, she ran out of the police station compound toward Democracia Street. Police gave chase, but she made good her escape into the night.
The trail stayed cold through July. Then, on Friday, August 7, 2026, she was detained once more, this time with no door left ajar. At the station she was read and issued her suspect’s rights in custody acknowledgement form, signing voluntarily, and was placed into custody pending charges.
In the early hours of Saturday, August 8, at 5:05 a.m., police obtained a warrant in the first instance and formally arrested and charged Kailyn Jacobs, an 18-year-old unemployed woman of Liberty Avenue, with the crime of escape from lawful custody.
It should also be noted that the cybercrime matter for which she was originally wanted remains exactly that in the report, a matter for which she was sought, with any charge on that front still to be confirmed.
Escape from lawful custody stands as its own offence regardless of the underlying matter, and Saturday’s charge carries its plain arithmetic: the June dash bought six weeks, and its price is now an additional count before the court that the original detention never carried.
