By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 21-year-old Orange Walk District woman survived a violent knifepoint attack in which she was beaten and raped, allegedly by her former common-law husband, and police are now searching for the man, who is believed to have fled across the border into Mexico.
According to the Belize Police Department, the young woman reported that on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at about 9:30 p.m., she was at her mother’s residence, where she lives, talking with a male friend, when the man suddenly approached her and dragged her inside her room. According to her report, he threw her onto the bed, began removing her clothing, and punched her several times in the face.
She fought back, striking him in the face with her cellphone and biting his finger. This, she reported, only enraged him further. He dragged her by the hair to the backyard, threw her to the ground, placed a pocket knife at her neck, and threatened to stab her if she screamed. He then dragged her to an abandoned house nearby, where he continued punching her, held the knife to her throat, and told her that if she would not be with him, she would be with no one else. He then raped her.
Afterward, according to the report, he dragged her back toward her mother’s yard, where she managed to free herself and ran for help. The man fled the scene. Bleeding heavily and badly injured, she was rushed by her sister to the Northern Regional Hospital.
At the hospital, a medical examination was conducted using a sexual assault evidence collection kit, with all relevant evidence collected, sealed, and handed over to police through a chain of custody. The woman required stitches near her left eye. She gave a statement requesting court action, and the scene in San Felipe Village was photographed and processed. Witness statements are yet to be recorded.
Police have listed a 29-year-old man of San Felipe Village as wanted in connection with the matter. Checks at his residence on Sunday, August 2, failed to locate him, and information received by police indicates he is hiding across the border on the Mexican side.
