The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Jamaica, which handles consular affairs in Belize, has noted the recent article entitled ‘Taiwan Strongly Opposes China’s Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law; Urges the International Community to Jointly Counter Authoritarian Expansionism’ by Mr. Amino C. Y. Chi, and has issued the stern response as below:
The above-mentioned article misrepresented the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law and smeared it as ‘long-arm jurisdiction and transnational repression’. Such kind of views are unobjective and legally unfounded.
We would like to point out that China is a multi-ethnic country where various ethnic groups are all equal and united in a harmonious relationship of mutual assistance. Strengthening the rule of law is conducive to better protecting the legitimate rights and interests of all ethnic groups and enhancing ethnic unity. Maintaining social solidarity and order, guarding against secession and sabotage through domestic legislation complies with the common practice all over the world. Our practices and achievements in this area have been widely recognized by the international community.
There’s but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. In 1971, the 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, deciding to restore all the rights of China in the U.N., and expel forthwith the representatives of the Taiwan authorities from the organization. The U.N.’s official legal opinion affirmed Taiwan as a province of China. The one-China principle is an international consensus. Today, over 180 countries have established diplomatic ties with China based on the one-China principle. China firmly opposes separatist attempts for “Taiwan independence” and interference by external forces. This is not only the natural requirement for defending China’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and core interests, but is also part and parcel of China’s efforts to uphold international fairness and justice, safeguard the fruits of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, and maintain the postwar order.
We urge relevant people to respect historical facts, stop spreading lies by hyping up ethnic issues. And we welcome the minority of countries to recognize the overarching trend of history and return at an early date to the right path of the one-China principle.
