By Breaking Belize News Staff: A homeless Belize City man was sentenced to a total of 14 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of a pipe used for smoking controlled drugs and being ordered to serve additional time for an unpaid court fine.

Kenrick Hendricks, 43, who has no fixed address, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court No. 2, where he pleaded guilty to possession of a 5.5-centimetre pipe adapted for smoking controlled drugs.

Hendricks was sentenced to six months in prison for the offence. The court then discovered that he had an outstanding fine from an earlier conviction and ordered him to serve an additional eight months in default of payment.

According to police, officers were conducting a mobile patrol in Belize City at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, when they saw Hendricks sitting at the Puma Gas Station.

Police reportedly approached Hendricks because of an increase in burglaries in the area and searched him for possible burglary tools. During the search, the officer allegedly found the pipe inside Hendricks’ front pants pocket.

Hendricks was arrested and charged before being taken to court, where the combined sentences resulted in a total prison term of 14 months.
