By Zoila Palma: Mexico will file criminal complaints in the United States over the deaths of Mexican nationals in immigration custody and during immigration enforcement operations, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced today.
Sheinbaum said the legal action aims to hold accountable those responsible for alleged homicides or human rights violations, Reuters report.
According to the Mexican government, 14 Mexican citizens have died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while three others were killed during arrest operations carried out by the agency.
Sheinbaum said Mexico “cannot turn a blind eye to the Mexicans who have died” and stressed that her government remains committed to assisting all its citizens abroad, “especially to Mexicans whose only crime is working honestly in the United States.”
Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco said the decision comes after repeated efforts to address the issue through diplomatic channels failed to produce results.
He said Mexico will now take the matter directly to U.S. prosecutors, requesting criminal investigations into the deaths.
In addition, the government plans to file civil lawsuits against the private companies that operate immigration detention centers in the United States.
