By Zoila Palma: A German palliative care doctor has been sentenced to life in prison after a court in Berlin found him guilty of murdering 15 patients over nearly three years.
The 41-year-old doctor, identified only as Johannes M. under German privacy laws, was convicted of killing 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024, BBC reports.
The court also imposed a lifetime ban on him practicing medicine and ordered preventive detention following his prison sentence, citing the particularly serious nature of his crimes.
According to prosecutors, the victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 and, although they were seriously ill, none were believed to have been on the verge of death.
During home visits, the doctor allegedly administered a lethal combination of medications without their consent. Prosecutors also said he set fires at several crime scenes in an effort to destroy evidence. In one of the final incidents before his arrest in July 2024, authorities said he killed two patients in a single day and unsuccessfully attempted to set fire to one victim’s home.
The doctor remained largely silent throughout the year-long trial before admitting last month that he had “killed people,” confessing to the deaths of 12 severely ill patients. He told the court he believed he was sparing them from suffering and infirmity, saying he had convinced himself he was doing what was best for everyone. He also apologized for the pain he caused the victims and their families.
Despite the convictions, prosecutors believe the killings may represent only a fraction of the doctor’s crimes.
