By Zoila Palma: Cuba experienced a nationwide blackout on Monday after the country’s electrical grid suffered a total collapse, worsening an ongoing energy crisis that has affected millions of residents.
The Ministry of Energy said authorities were investigating the cause of the failure while working to restore electricity across the island.
Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy said emergency “microsystems” had been activated to provide power to essential services as restoration efforts continued.
By today, Havana’s utility company reported that about one-third of the capital’s electricity had been restored.
Cuba has suffered several major blackouts in recent years as its aging power infrastructure struggles to keep up with demand, CNN reports.
The latest outage comes as Cuba faces increased economic pressure and fuel shortages, which officials blame partly on U.S. restrictions affecting oil shipments.
