By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Hon. Francis Fonseca, Minister of Culture and Chairman of the National Celebrations Commission, together with members of the Commission, has officially unveiled the theme for the Belize@45 National Celebrations, though the choice has drawn a mixed response from the public.

The winning theme, “Look At Me: I am Belize@45,” was submitted by 18-year-old Amber Mariano and selected as this year’s official theme. According to the Commission, as Belize prepares to commemorate 45 years of Independence, the theme places the spotlight where it belongs, on the people. It is intended as a celebration of every Belizean whose resilience, diversity, culture, talent, and shared aspirations continue to shape the nation’s story.

Officials say the theme is a reminder that Belize is not defined solely by its landscapes or institutions, but by the strength, unity, and spirit of its people. The Belize@45 National Celebrations will aim to honour the individuals and communities who embody the nation’s past, present, and future, celebrating the collective identity that makes Belize proudly one people, one nation.

Since its unveiling, however, the theme has become a talking point online, with a number of Belizeans taking to social media to poke fun at the wording. The phrase “Look At Me” in particular has drawn playful jabs and jokes from some, sparking lively discussion across the country’s Facebook pages.

Others have come to the theme’s defence, noting that its message is a positive one, meant to shine a light on the people who make up the nation. Supporters point out that behind the wording is a genuine attempt to centre ordinary Belizeans in the Independence festivities.

Whatever one’s view of the phrasing, the debate itself reflects the passion Belizeans bring to their national celebrations. As the country counts down to 45 years of Independence, the focus will soon shift to the festivities themselves, and to honouring the spirit and unity that the theme, at its heart, sets out to celebrate.
