International News: Mexican fans keep Ecuador awake ahead of World Cup round of 32 Clash

By Zoila Palma:  Mexican football fans gathered outside Ecuador’s team hotel overnight ahead of today’s FIFA World Cup round of 32 match at Mexico City Stadium.

From midnight until the early hours, dozens of supporters assembled outside the Westin Hotel in Santa Fe, using loudspeakers, vehicle horns, and motorcycles to create noise throughout the night, AP reports.

The late-night disturbance was organized through social media and is part of a long-standing but controversial tradition in Latin American football.

While hotel serenades have historically been used to encourage home teams, they have increasingly become a psychological tactic aimed at depriving visiting players of sleep before important matches.

The disruption came after Ecuador had already endured a difficult journey to Mexico City. The team intentionally scheduled a late Monday arrival to reduce the effects of the city’s 2,200-meter altitude by following the “fly-in, fly-out” approach often recommended by sports scientists.

However, head coach Sebastián Beccacece said the squad’s flight was delayed by more than three hours, turning the trip into a nine-hour journey.

Despite the setbacks, Beccacece said the team remains in good spirits and is looking forward to facing Mexico after the hosts’ strong performance in the group stage.
