By Breaking Belize News Staff: Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller has publicly rejected suggestions that he was pressured by Prime Minister and People’s United Party Leader John Briceño to withdraw from the PUP’s Belize City mayoral convention.

The statement comes amid growing political attention around the internal PUP race between Miller and fellow mayoral aspirant Allan Pollard, as both men seek to become the party’s candidate for Belize City in the upcoming municipal elections.

Over the past several days, questions have been raised over whether senior members of the PUP had approached Miller about possibly stepping aside from the race. However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, Miller said he was “never instructed or encouraged” by Prime Minister Briceño to withdraw from the convention.

Miller confirmed that he met with the Party Leader and that the two had what he described as a candid discussion about the upcoming municipal elections, including Belize City. He said that as part of that meeting, they discussed his intentions regarding the mayoral convention.

According to Miller, he later informed the Prime Minister that he fully intends to participate in the convention, and that Briceño was “very respectful” of his decision.

“As such, I remain committed to participating in the upcoming municipal convention,” Miller said.

Miller also noted that the National Executive of the People’s United Party has agreed that a convention will be held for Belize City, signaling that the contest between him and Pollard is expected to proceed before delegates.

The race has drawn significant attention within the ruling party, as both Miller and Pollard have publicly put themselves forward for the mayoral candidacy. The outcome of the convention will determine who leads the PUP’s Belize City slate into the next municipal elections.

Miller said he looks forward to engaging with delegates throughout the process and continuing discussions with Belize City residents about the future of the municipality.
