By Zoila Palma:  Recently, Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) hosted a Binational Taskforce Meeting to report on illicit activities and to define strategies

“Illegal wildlife trade is a major threat to wildlife species including both animals and plants. In the Chiquibul and Caracol region the targeted species over the years have been scarlet macaws, mahogany and now sapodilla trees,” FCD said.

Representatives from various partners including the Forest Department, National Biodiversity Office, Institute of Archaeology, Wildlife Conservation Society and FCD participated in the meeting.

Partners from Guatemala included Consejo Nacional de Areas Protegidas, Asociacion Balam and Foro de Justicia Ambiental.

FCD presented on the long-term binational initiative to combat illegal wildlife trade since 2013 and gave an overview of the actual situation today.

FCD noted that a resurgence of illicit activities is currently being documented with sapodilla, and copal resin on the rise.

A joint action plan is to be developed by October which will define interventions to address this.
