By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Leader of the Opposition has issued a scathing statement against the People’s United Party government, declaring that Belize is a nation in crisis as it grapples with a wave of crime and violence.
In a statement released from the desk of the Leader of the Opposition, the United Democratic Party (UDP) pointed to recent killings, including a double murder in San Pedro and the death of 16-year-old Isiah Noralez in Dangriga, as painful evidence that the country can no longer pretend all is well. The party joined the people of San Pedro, Dangriga, and all Belizeans in mourning the senseless loss of life.
The UDP issued what it called an urgent plea to Prime Minister John Briceño and his Cabinet, insisting that the people of Belize need action. The party called for strategic leadership within the Belize Police Department and said it wants assurance that the government fully recognises the gravity of the situation and is prepared to confront it with urgency, courage, and determination.
The statement stressed that crime does not discriminate along political lines. “The violence consuming our nation does not wear party colours,” the party said, noting that the bullets do not ask whether someone is PUP or UDP, rich or poor, young or old, and that no one is immune.
At the same time, the Opposition extended an offer to help. The UDP said it stands ready to be part of the solution, pledging to support any genuine effort aimed at protecting Belizean lives, restoring public safety, rebuilding confidence in law enforcement, and bringing peace back to the streets. Crime and violence, the party said, are everyone’s problem and must become everyone’s priority.
The statement did not hold back in its criticism of the government, describing it as completely aloof and out of touch with the hardships many Belizeans are facing. The party argued that it is time to focus on serving the needs of the nation, and accused the government of protecting the interests of what it called the favoured few. Those characterisations reflect the Opposition’s political position.
The UDP closed by warning that Belize cannot continue to accept the murder of its people as the new normal, or to live from one tragedy to the next, offering sympathy after the fact while families bury their loved ones. The party offered its deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones.
