By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The University of Belize (UB) has taken a significant step forward for higher education in the country, signing a memorandum of understanding with Georgia Southern University to launch an official partnership that opens up new research projects and degree programs at both institutions.

Under the agreement, UB faculty and students will gain access to master’s and doctoral degree programs at Georgia Southern through streamlined applications and financial aid. In turn, Georgia Southern will gain access to Belize’s unique research locations, creating opportunities for students and faculty to study marine biology, tropical ecology, and natural resource management.

Representatives from both universities gathered for an official signing ceremony on the main campus of UB in Belmopan. Avinandan (Avi) Mukherjee, Ph.D., Georgia Southern’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, said the partnership reflects the university’s commitment to building meaningful global collaborations. “By connecting our institutions, we are creating new pathways for discovery, innovation and academic excellence while addressing challenges that extend beyond national borders,” he said. “Together, we will strengthen research, develop future leaders and create opportunities that benefit both universities and the communities we serve.”

The partnership offers real, practical benefits for Belizeans. UB faculty will be able to pursue advanced degrees at Georgia Southern through a hybrid format that lets them continue teaching at home. They will spend one academic year in residence at a Georgia Southern campus for foundational coursework and research planning, then return to Belize to complete their research and dissertation while keeping their teaching duties. UB graduates who meet the admission requirements will also be able to apply to graduate school at Georgia Southern with research and teaching assistantships, or in-state tuition for those who do not receive an assistantship.

The momentum is already building. Two recent UB graduates have enrolled in doctoral programs in materials science and environmental science, while other students have expressed interest in engineering and applied computing during recent exchange trips.

UB President Vincent Palacio, Ph.D., welcomed the collaboration. “This memorandum of understanding has already proven to be one of our most productive partnerships, with guest lectures taking place and University of Belize students already being accepted into graduate programs at Georgia Southern University,” he said. “These early successes demonstrate the strength of this partnership, and I look forward to even greater collaboration and impact in the years ahead.”

Beyond individual opportunities, the two universities plan to tackle shared goals such as coastal resiliency and national development through joint research, an investment that promises to strengthen Belize’s research capacity and prepare skilled graduates ready to lead on the global stage.
