By Zoila Palma:  As part of Belize City’s journey toward becoming a Tsunami Ready City, the City Emergency Management Organization (CEMO), in collaboration with NEMO, the Belize Meteorological Service, and the International Tsunami Information Center–Caribbean Office (ITIC-CAR), is strengthening public awareness by engaging our youngest citizens.

As part of this initiative, students of Buttonwood Bay Nazarene Primary School recently participated in a tsunami evacuation simulation alongside CEMO, NEMO, the Belize Police Department, and the Belize Fire Service.

The Belize City Council says that through this hands-on exercise, students learned how to recognize tsunami alerts, follow evacuation procedures, and respond quickly and safely during an emergency.

“Every drill, every lesson, and every informed student brings Belize City one step closer to becoming a safer, more prepared, and officially Tsunami Ready community,” the council said.
