SIB Labour Survey: More than half of Employed persons work for employers, only 26% Self-employed in April 2026

By Zoila Palma:  Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize’s (SIB) Labour Force Survey indicates that in April 2026, Belize recorded 166,894 employed persons, with males accounting for more than three-fifths of total employment.

The survey shows that nearly half of all employed persons were between the ages of 25 and 44.

In terms of industry distribution, the largest share of employment was recorded in the “Wholesale and Retail Trade” sector at 16.4 percent. This was followed by “Community, Social & Personal Services” at 14.5 percent and the Tourism industry at 12.8 percent. Both “Government Services; Compulsory Social Security” and “Agriculture and related activities” each accounted for 11.7 percent of total employment.

The survey found that more than half of all employed persons (55.4 percent) were employees working for others, while 26.1 percent were self-employed.

A smaller proportion, 1.5 percent, were classified as contributing family workers.
