By Zoila Palma:  Belize’s inflation rate rose to 4.3 percent in May 2026, driven largely by sharp increases in fuel costs, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The All-Items CPI stood at 124.8 in May 2026, up from 119.6 during the same month last year, reflecting higher prices across most categories of goods and services.

The SIB reported that the transport category was the largest contributor to inflation, accounting for half of the overall increase in consumer prices.

Transport costs increased by 14 percent compared to May 2025, continuing an upward trend that began earlier this year.

The increase was largely fueled by higher motor vehicle fuel prices.

Diesel recorded the steepest jump, rising by $3.69 per gallon from $11.39 in May 2025 to $15.08 in May 2026. Regular gasoline increased by $3.30 per gallon, moving from $11.66 to $14.96, while premium gasoline rose by $1.47 per gallon to reach $14.69.

Passenger transport services also saw a 15.5 percent increase, reflecting higher bus fares and international airfare costs.

The SIB report noted that transport, food, and housing-related expenses continued to be the primary drivers behind inflationary pressures.
