By Zoila Palma:  On June 23, 2026, the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) team marked the official inauguration of the new Steven Page Ranger Station in the Port Honduras Marine Reserve.

“We were honored to be joined by our partners from IUCN and the German Development Bank, whose significant investment over the past year made possible the renovation of the ranger station and boardwalk. Additional support was provided by The Wallace Foundation through Mass Audubon and The Overbrook Foundation,” TIDE said.

TIDE expressed gratitude to donors and partners, and to the legacy of the late Steven Page, whose vision and commitment helped make this new facility a reality.

“The new ranger station represents an important investment in the future of conservation in southern Belize. It will strengthen TIDE’s enforcement capacity and enhance our efforts to monitor and protect nesting sea turtles along the Punta Ycacos coastline,” TIDE added.

The event also marked the successful completion of the IUCN Linking the Central American Landscape Project. Through this initiative, TIDE made significant investments in management planning, training, equipment, and infrastructure to strengthen both our enforcement and science programs, contributing to improved management effectiveness across our protected areas.

The project also supported the establishment of the TIDE Native Tree Nursery in Big Falls and the restoration of 72.5 hectares of degraded forest within the TIDE Private Protected Lands. Between 2024 and 2025, more than 12,500 native trees were planted as part of these restoration efforts.

TIDE explained that hundreds of young people were engaged through activities such as the TIDE Saltwater Cup, Summer Camps, and educational visits to the tree nursery.

At the regional level, the project supported the development of the Integrated Management Plan for the Gulf of Honduras, strengthening the Tri-National Alliance for the Gulf of Honduras (TRIGOH) and creating new opportunities for collaborative conservation initiatives across the region.

TIDE extended its appreciation to IUCN Protected and Conserved Areas, the German Development Bank, and all of partners and supporters whose contributions continue to strengthen conservation efforts in the Port Honduras Marine Reserve and beyond.
