By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The World Cup group stage is in full swing, and the picture is starting to take shape. For football fans across Belize who have been glued to the action, here is a look at where things stand across all twelve groups.
At the top of the pile, several of the tournament favourites are making a statement. Mexico has been perfect so far in Group A with six points, and the United States has done the same in Group D. They are joined on a maximum six points by Germany in Group E, France in Group I, Argentina in Group J, and Colombia in Group K. That is a cluster of heavyweights setting the early pace.
For the region, there is plenty to smile about. The three North American hosts are all in good shape. Mexico and the United States are flying high, while Canada sits top of Group B alongside Switzerland, both on four points.
The big names are largely delivering. Lionel Messi and Argentina lead Group J ahead of Austria and Algeria. Over in Group K, however, it is not Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal on top, but Colombia, who have raced to six points and pushed Portugal into second.
There have been a few eyebrow raising results too. In Group I, Norway has matched France stride for stride, with both on six points, while Senegal and Iraq are still searching for their first point. Belgium has struggled in Group G, sitting on just two points behind leaders Egypt. In Group C, Brazil finds itself level on four points with Morocco, with Scotland lurking close behind.
There is also a feel good story for the smaller footballing nations. Island side Cape Verde is still in the hunt in Group H, and Curaçao remains alive in Group E. For Belizean fans who dream of one day seeing the Jewel on this stage, watching small nations mix it with the world’s best is always something special.
At the other end, several teams have it all to do, with the likes of Haiti, Panama, Senegal, Iraq, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan and Uzbekistan still looking for their first points of the tournament.
With group matches still to come, there is everything to play for. Expect plenty more drama before we learn who advances to the knockout rounds.
