By Zoila Palma: Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in football history to score in 6 FIFA World Cup tournaments, netting twice in Portugal’s commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan.
The 41-year-old forward reached the milestone in the sixth minute when he converted a cross from João Cancelo with a right-footed finish to give Portugal an early lead.
Ronaldo struck again in the 39th minute after receiving a pass from Bruno Fernandes and calmly placing the ball inside the near post to make it 3-0. His performance earned him the Man of the Match award and helped silence criticism that followed Portugal’s 1-1 draw against Congo in its opening match, where he failed to score.
The two goals also made Ronaldo the second-oldest player ever to score in a World Cup, behind Cameroon’s Roger Milla, who scored at age 42 during the 1994 tournament in the United States.
Earlier this year, Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the only men to appear in six World Cups, but Ronaldo now stands alone as the only player to score in all six editions after finding the net in 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026.
Ronaldo’s latest goals increased his World Cup tally to 10, surpassing Eusébio’s nine to become Portugal’s all-time leading scorer in the tournament. The goals also extended his international record to 145 goals in 230 appearances, the most by any player in history.
