By Zoila Palma: The UDP has issued a statement saying that it joins the call of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) in calling for “the immediate removal of Minister Oscar Mira from the Cabinet of Belize and for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the serious allegations surrounding government contracts awarded to companies connected to his family.”
The UDP says that the allegations “raise troubling questions about conflicts of interest, procurement practices, compliance with financial regulations, and the integrity of public administration. These issues strike at the heart of public trust and confidence in government.”
The UDP calls on Prime Minister John Briceño to immediately remove Minister Mira from Cabinet and relieve him of all ministerial responsibilities pending the outcome of a comprehensive independent inquiry.
In addition, the UDP says that it supports the union’s call for a thorough investigation into the awarding of contracts, the approval and payment processes, and any actions that may have been taken to circumvent established financial controls, procurement regulations, or Treasury oversight mechanisms.
“Anyone found to have participated in or facilitated wrongdoing, regardless of position, must be held fully accountable under the law.
This matter goes beyond one minister. It is about whether Belizeans can have confidence that public office is being exercised in the public interest and not for the benefit of politically connected interests. The people of Belize deserve complete transparency and assurance that public resources are being managed fairly, lawfully, and in accordance with established rules,” the UDP said.
