By Zoila Palma:  On June 17, 2026, a two session training on Integrated Pest & Disease Management in Bees was conducted at the Agriculture Department conference room in Central Farm, Cayo District.

The first session covered theory followed by a practical session at Shalaw Leslie’s Apiary at Camalote Village, Cayo.

The training was facilitated by Extension Officers Noe Oliva and Moises Perez and was attended by 15 participants.

The session also covered common pests in bees such as the Small Hive Beetle, Varroa Mite and Wax Moth; the importance of proper management and the need for constant monitoring of the apiary.

Participants also learned about common signs and symptoms that can help beekeepers detect pests in their apiary at an early stage.

The Ministry says that participants also conducted a hands-on session where they observed and assisted in identifying these pests.

The Ministry says that this training helps beekeepers strengthen their apiary management skills to increase their honey production in the Cayo District. Several pieces of equipment were issued to beekeepers as well.

The training session was made possible by funding from the CRESAP project.
