By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Maria Arthurs was officially sworn in today before Governor-General H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam, beginning a three-year term in one of the country’s most important oversight positions.
As Contractor General, Arthurs will be responsible for monitoring the award and implementation of public contracts, helping to ensure that government projects and procurement processes are carried out fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the law.
The position plays a critical role in promoting accountability across the public sector, particularly at a time when public spending and government contracts continue to attract national attention.
The Office of the Contractor General serves as an independent watchdog, reviewing procurement activities and helping safeguard the proper use of public funds. Its work is aimed at ensuring that contracts are awarded on merit and that taxpayers receive value for money from government projects.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at Belize House, where Arthurs took the oath of office before the Governor-General.
Her appointment comes as Belize continues efforts to strengthen transparency, good governance, and public confidence in government institutions.
With a three-year mandate ahead, Arthurs now assumes responsibility for overseeing an area that many Belizeans view as essential to maintaining trust and accountability in the management of public resources.
