By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 60-year-old Belize City man has been fined after pleading guilty to possession of a utensil used for smoking a controlled drug.
Brian Castillo, a common labourer of Cleghorn Street, appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was read a single charge of possession of a utensil used for smoking a controlled drug, namely a 2 1/4-inch glass pipe.
Castillo pleaded guilty and asked the court for leniency, telling the magistrate that he cares for his terminally ill daughter, who has been diagnosed with cancer.
The court heard that Castillo had appeared before the same magistrate two months ago on a similar charge and was fined at that time.
On Wednesday, the sitting magistrate again imposed a non-custodial sentence, fining Castillo $350 plus a $5 cost of court. He has until September 30, 2026, to pay the fine, or he will serve three months in prison.
Castillo was also recommended to enter a drug program and was directed to enroll in the ENDA Program. He was warned that another drug-related conviction could result in a custodial sentence.
