By Zoila Palma: Kyon Shakeel Swaso, a leading organizer of the ongoing hunger strike at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in California, has been deported to Belize after being transferred through several detention facilities in Texas and Louisiana.
Swaso’s legal representatives from the Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) said the transfers occurred without notice before his removal from the United States, CALO news reports.
According to ImmDef, Swaso met with U.S. lawmakers on June 1 during a congressional visit to the Adelanto detention center, where a petition signed by 150 detainees detailing conditions inside the facility was presented. Days later, he was transferred from California to a detention center in El Paso, Texas, and then to the Winn Correctional Center in Louisiana. ImmDef alleges that neither the court, Swaso nor his attorney received the notice required under a federal court order before the transfers took place.
Before his deportation, Swaso criticized conditions inside the detention system, alleging that detainees faced inadequate medical care, limited access to legal representation and violations of due process rights. He also called for the closure of detention facilities, claiming immigrants were being mistreated. Community advocates said Swaso’s bank accounts have since been frozen and efforts are underway to raise funds to assist him in Belize.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Swaso’s deportation on June 12, stating that he had received a final order of removal and was transferred as part of removal proceedings.
