By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 24-year-old factory worker is out on bail after he was arraigned on Monday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court for allegedly possessing more than 100 grams of cannabis with intent to supply.

Layton Vernon, a Belize City resident, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where he was read a single charge of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply 115.4 grams of cannabis.

At the start of the proceedings, Vernon appeared ready to plead guilty, telling the court, “I nuh wah waste time.” He initially admitted to possessing the drugs and indicated he wanted to be honest.

However, after the prosecution outlined the facts of the case, Vernon disagreed with the allegation that he intended to supply the cannabis to another person.

“On the charge sheet, charge seh I deh supply to another but I nuh agree with that,” Vernon told the court. He added, “I bought it for me. I nuh sell. It was for me because I work.”

In light of his denial of the intent-to-supply allegation, the Senior Magistrate explained that she could not accept his guilty plea and instead entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf.

With no objection to bail from the prosecution, Vernon was granted bail in the sum of $2,500 plus one surety.

As a condition of his release, he is required to report to the Racoon Street Police Station once every Wednesday between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. until the matter is concluded.

Vernon was able to meet his bail conditions and is scheduled to return to court on August 3, 2026.
