By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City food vendor and licensed electrician is out on bail after being arraigned on a charge of common assault involving his common-law wife.

Twenty-nine-year-old Julio Cesar Alvarez appeared before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with assaulting his 37-year-old common-law wife during a domestic incident on Antelope Street.

According to the allegations, the woman reported that on Tuesday night, June 9, she went to purchase food at a stall on Central American Boulevard when she and Alvarez got into an argument over money. She claimed she threw money at Alvarez, after which he allegedly punched her in the face and head, causing pain.

Police were called and Alvarez was detained and later charged with common assault. The woman was reportedly issued medico-legal forms but refused medical examination, telling police she had no visible injuries.

In court, Alvarez initially pleaded guilty, but after the facts were read to him, he told the court, “No sir, that’s not what happen.” Senior Magistrate Dennison then explained that because he did not agree with the facts, an equivocal plea of not guilty would have to be entered on his behalf.

Alvarez maintained that he did not assault his common-law wife, telling the court, “I never put my fingers on the lady.” He claimed the dispute began because he refused to give her money and alleged that she struck him with his helmet.

There was no objection to bail, and Alvarez was offered bail in the sum of $1,200 plus one surety of the same amount. As part of his bail conditions, he must not interfere with his common-law wife or any witnesses and must stay 150 feet away from her.

Before leaving court, Alvarez asked how he could retrieve his personal belongings from the home. He was advised to seek police assistance to escort him to collect only his personal items.

Alvarez’s next court date is set for August 3, 2026.
