By Zoila Palma: Today is being observed globally as World Day Against Child Labour.
The day is being observed under the theme, “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults.”
Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceno says that utilizing the powerful symbolism of a red card in sports, this campaign sends a clear message: child labour is unacceptable and has no place in our communities because every child has the right to learn, play, dream, and grow up in a safe environment free from exploitation.
“The campaign also recognizes the connection between child labour and adult poverty, emphasizing that fair wages, decent work, and sustainable livelihoods for adults are essential to preventing the exploitation of children.
As we mark this day, let us accelerate efforts to ensure access to education, strengthen child protection systems, enforce laws, and create opportunities that allow families to thrive, ensuring every child can enjoy the childhood they deserve,” the Special Envoy said.
