By Zoila Palma:  The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially got underway today at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City with a vibrant opening ceremony ahead of the tournament’s first match between Mexico and South Africa.

The ceremony marked the start of the largest World Cup in history, featuring 104 matches across three host nations.

Latin music and dance performances took center stage around a massive replica of the World Cup trophy positioned in the middle of the pitch.

The highlight of the show came when Colombian superstar Shakira joined Nigerian singer Burna Boy to perform “Dai Dai,” the official song of the tournament, drawing loud cheers from the packed stadium crowd.

Mexico and South Africa were the only teams in action on opening day, maintaining the long-standing tradition of a single opening match despite the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams.

Security was heightened throughout Mexico City, including at a large outdoor viewing area where reports of minor scuffles emerged as fans gathered before kickoff.
