Leader of Opposition expresses concern over constitutional claim filed by former Ombudsman against Government of Belize

By Zoila Palma:  Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton has expressed concern over the constitutional claim filed by former Ombudsman Major Gilbert Swazo against the Government of Belize.

“At the heart of this matter is not simply the fate of one individual. It is a question of whether independent constitutional offices in Belize can operate without fear of victimization, retaliation, or political interference.  The violation of our fundamental rights and freedoms is a matter I raised on the adjournment in our most recent House Meeting,” Panton said.

“The former Ombudsman alleges that his appointment was not renewed after he ruled in favor of a Freedom of Information request seeking disclosure of legal fees paid by the Government in the redistricting case. He further alleges that the Government sought to exercise influence over matters that should have remained entirely within the independent jurisdiction of the Ombudsman’s Office. These allegations strike at the very foundation of good governance, transparency, and accountability,” she added.

The Leader of the Opposition says that the Ombudsman exists to protect ordinary Belizeans from abuse, maladministration, and unfair treatment by the State.

“The Opposition has repeatedly warned against the weakening of independent institutions and has also raised concerns about the prolonged vacancy of the Ombudsman’s Office; the failure to strengthen oversight bodies; and, the growing perception that constitutional safeguards are being treated as inconveniences rather than essential pillars of democracy,” Panton said.

Panton further called on the Government to immediately address the vacancy in the Ombudsman’s Office and provide full transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the non-renewal of Major Swazo’s appointment.
