By Zoila Palma: A U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday while conducting a patrol mission in regional waters off the coast of Oman.
According to U.S. Central Command (Centcom), the two crew members aboard the aircraft were safely rescued within approximately two hours of the incident and were reported to be in stable condition.
Military officials said that the rescue marked the first time U.S. forces have used an uncrewed surface drone to save personnel, BBC reports.
The operation was led by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and the 82nd Airborne Division, with support from U.S. Air Force and Navy units, including the U.S. 5th Fleet’s Task Force 59. Officials said the drone used in the rescue was operated by Task Force 59, a unit focused on integrating unmanned systems with manned operators to enhance maritime security in the Middle East.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it was not immediately known whether the helicopter experienced a mechanical failure, another technical issue, or was brought down by hostile fire.
