UDP says Belize cannot afford to leave the Ombudsman’s office vacant

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The United Democratic Party is raising concerns about the fact that Belize has reportedly been without a substantive Ombudsman since December 31, 2025, arguing that the vacancy is weakening one of the country’s most important oversight institutions. According to a press release issued by the party, Belizeans have effectively been left without a fully functioning independent office responsible for investigating complaints against public authorities.

The UDP argues that the Ombudsman plays a critical role in protecting citizens from maladministration, abuse of power, unfair treatment, and violations of their rights. The party contends that the prolonged vacancy raises questions about accountability and transparency within government.

According to the opposition, the situation goes beyond a simple administrative delay. The UDP says Belizeans deserve an explanation as to why no substantive Ombudsman has been appointed and why no acting Ombudsman has reportedly been designated to ensure continuity of the office.

The party further argues that constitutional offices are designed to hold governments accountable regardless of which administration is in power. In its statement, the UDP warns that every day the office remains vacant potentially weakens public confidence in oversight institutions and access to justice.

Whether the government agrees with the criticism or not, the issue highlights an important question for Belize. How long should one of the country’s key constitutional watchdog positions remain unfilled before citizens demand answers?
