Statement by Leader of Opposition Tracy Panton
Before before I call it a night, I wish to express my deepest regret on the tragic murder of 15-year-old Rackeem Armstrong of Gardenia Village, whose young life was cut short by senseless gun violence last night. The United Democratic Party, my family and I extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, classmates, the entire community of Gardenia and to his 18-year old cousin, Justin Young, who was also injured in this devastating incident.
A fifteen-year-old child should be preparing for school, dreaming about his future, and enjoying the blessings of youth. Instead, another Belizean family has been left to mourn, another community has been traumatized, and another promising life has been stolen from us. Belize has witnessed an alarming escalation of violence, particularly involving our young people. We cannot allow ourselves to become desensitized to the loss of life. Every child matters. Every life matters. Every family deserves justice.
We must confront the deeper societal issues fueling this cycle of violence: poverty, hopelessness, the proliferation of illegal firearms, gang activity, and the growing sense among many young people that opportunities for a better future are slipping away. We must invest in prevention, intervention, education, mentorship, and community-based initiatives that give our young people hope, purpose, and alternatives to violence.
