By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 49-year-old woman is dead after a motorcycle accident on Bullet Tree Road Friday night, and the driver has refused to cooperate with police investigators.
Auria Ramos of Bullet Tree Falls Village lost her life after 32-year-old Melvin Quishan, who was driving a Lifan brand motorcycle, lost control of the bike and veered off-road in the Santa Familia Village area. Ramos, who was riding behind Quishan, suffered injuries to her chest and body. BERT personnel arrived at the scene and transported her for medical attention, but she succumbed to her injuries a few hours later.
When responding officers arrived at the scene, they observed Quishan seated on the road with minor injuries and abrasions to his face and body. At the time, he was holding Ramos, who was complaining of pain to the chest.
Officers reported that they detected the smell of alcohol on Quishan and requested that he submit to a urine sample. He refused to comply.
ASP Stacy Smith confirmed that police have since issued Quishan a Notice of Intended Prosecution as part of an ongoing investigation into the fatal crash.
“The investigation commenced on Friday 22nd May just after 10 o’clock p.m. when police responded to reports of a traffic accident in Santa Familia Village,” ASP Smith stated.
She added that a litany of charges are being considered against Quishan, noting that refusing to submit to a sobriety test is itself an offense under the law.
“There are certain processes that have to be taken before we reach that point,” ASP Smith said, indicating that the case is still actively developing.
The investigation is ongoing. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
