By Zoila Palma: Today, Taiwan’s foreign minister said that a potential phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Taiwan President Lai Ching-te would be viewed positively, though no planning discussions have taken place and the initiative rests with Trump.
Speaking in parliament, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said Taiwan was prepared should such a conversation occur but emphasized that no bilateral consultations have yet been held, Reuters report.
A direct call between U.S. and Taiwanese leaders would be unprecedented and could strain relations between Washington and Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.
U.S. and Taiwanese presidents have not spoken directly since Washington shifted diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979. Trump reiterated last Wednesday that he intended to speak with Lai, dismissing earlier speculation that his initial reference to such a call had been a verbal mistake.
“If there were a phone call between the heads of state of the United States and Taiwan, I think we would view that very positively,” Lin said.
He added that Lai’s administration was prepared, but said the matter depended on whether Trump chose to pursue the call.
