By Zoila Palma: Today, the Belize City Council team hit the ground early for the 2nd Annual CEMO Flood Mitigation Clean-Up Campaign, a citywide, multi-departmental effort aimed at strengthening Belize City’s flood preparedness ahead of the hurricane season.
Teams were simultaneously deployed to clear drains, remove debris, improve water flow, and directly engage residents on flood preparedness and sanitation awareness.
“With the support of additional manpower and specialized equipment, including vacuum trucks and sewer jet sweepers, crews were able to tackle critical drainage systems more aggressively and efficiently across several flood-prone communities.
But this campaign is not a one-day exercise.
Our Works and Sanitation Teams continue this work year-round, responding daily to drainage issues and maintaining vulnerable areas across the city. Today’s campaign simply allowed us to amplify those efforts with extra hands and a coordinated push involving Council Members, the Public Health Unit, Sanitation Inspectors, Enforcement Officers, administrative staff and CEMO personnel all working together toward one common goal,” the Belize City Council explained.
In addition, the Public Health Unit and Sanitation Inspectors also carried out a community outreach and education campaign focused on proper garbage disposal, hurricane preparedness, flood safety, and family emergency planning, while also identifying and tagging derelict vehicles within targeted areas.
The Belize City Council says that while some level of flooding in certain areas is unavoidable due to longstanding infrastructural limitations, the council remains fully committed to doing everything within our means to reduce the impacts.
“Thank you to every person and department who made today possible. With continued teamwork and civic pride, Belize City is ready for whatever the season brings,” the council expressed.
