By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-seven-year-old Jeffery Pott, a resident of Corozalito Village, is no longer facing a murder charge in connection with the June 2024 killing of Dion Martin Bodden, but he remains behind bars serving prison time for convictions of Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a minor.

Pott was expected to stand trial today before Justice Candace Nanton in the High Court for the murder of 50-year-old Dion Martin Bodden, who was gunned down on Pitts Alley, Belize City, on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

However, Crown Counsel Robert Lord entered a nolle prosequi, effectively discontinuing the murder case against Pott. He was represented in court by attorney Dr. Lynden Jones.

Justice Nanton explained to Pott that the decision is not an acquittal, and that while the Crown has discontinued the matter for now, the murder charge can be reinstated at a later date.

Pott, however, was not released from custody. He was returned to the Belize Central Prison, where he is currently serving sentences imposed on April 8, 2025, by Justice Nigel Pilgrim after he was found guilty of three counts of Unlawful Sexual Intercourse with a minor.

He was sentenced to 20 years, 5 months and 16 days each for two counts involving a girl under the age of 14, and 4 years, 5 months and 16 days for a third count involving the same minor after she was over the age of 14.

Pott has maintained his innocence in that case, and reports are that he intends to appeal both the conviction and sentence.

Bodden, a Belize City labourer, was shot around 1:48 a.m. on June 22, 2024. Police said he was walking on Pitts Alley when a gunman came from the direction of New Road and opened fire, fatally injuring him. Several expended 9mm shells and a slug were recovered from the scene.

Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the area of Victoria Street and North Front Street. Police alleged that the footage showed a man on a bicycle leaving a Victoria Street residence shortly before the shooting and returning shortly after. Pott was later identified by police as the man seen in the video.

That murder case has now been discontinued, but Pott remains imprisoned on the unrelated USI convictions.
