Construction underway for temporary bridges in Belize City

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has officially commenced work on the temporary bridge crossings in Belize City, aimed at facilitating traffic during the anticipated reconstruction of the Belcan and Swing Bridges later this year.

This week, Chief Engineer Evondale Moody confirmed that installation of foundation piles for the temporary bridge at the Belcan Bridge has begun. “At this point in time, we have awarded a contract for the replacement of Belcan Bridge that has been awarded to Cisco Construction Limited…I understand that the contractor is working on the installation of piles for the temporary bridge that will be constructed just behind Save-U that will bring that temporary bridge from Evergreen Street across to the Phillip Goldson Highway,” Moody stated. Once the temporary bridge is operational, traffic will be diverted from the existing Belcan Bridge, allowing for its removal and the start of the main construction.

Regarding the Swing Bridge, Moody reported that the procurement process for a contractor based in Japan is set to commence soon. In the meantime, local contractors will build a temporary structure from Hydes Lane to Regent Street West, also by Cisco Construction, ensuring two lanes of traffic are available in both directions.

Moody anticipated that construction of the temporary bridge near the Swing Bridge would begin within the week, with demolition of the old structure projected for late summer. “Once the temporary bridge is completed, which we anticipate will take us about three to four months as well, then we will start with the demolition of the old Swing Bridge, which we anticipate we want to do sometime in August or September, which will take us up to the end of December,” he added.

The MIDH has issued a notice to all mariners and users of the Haulover Creek regarding the active construction zones. A NO WAKE ZONE will be enforced for approximately 200 feet on either side of each construction area, and all aquatic traffic is urged to exercise caution and adhere to posted signage.

The Ministry appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as efforts to modernize Belize’s infrastructure continue, ensuring enhanced connectivity and safety for all road users.
