By Aaron Humes: A 16-year-old boy was arraigned in Family Court Monday morning, facing charges of murder for the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Salma Orellana Funes, a mother of three and hostess at the Da Buzz Restaurant and Lounge. The accused, who will turn 17 next month, was remanded to the Wagner’s Youth Facility on the grounds of the Belize Central Prison.
Last Thursday night, the teenager is accused of entering the restaurant, engaging in a conversation with Funes, allegedly demanding a cellphone from the victim, then snatching it away from her before he opened fire, shooting her more than a dozen times.
Reports say he confessed to police – and also led them to the weapon in an area behind his family’s home. But, so far, investigators have recovered a damaged cell phone which is not suspected to be the one the accused was after.
Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, when asked about the relationship between the suspect and the victim, said details are still emerging. “What I will say is that the information so far is not as definitive for me to say that there was mutual acknowledgement of a relationship between the two parties, so that is an aspect that is being reviewed.”
Additionally, ASP Smith revealed that the firearm used in the shooting was registered to a licensed gun holder, an individual employed by the suspect’s father. Investigators believe the teenager gained access to the weapon by breaking into a safe. As the case unfolds, additional charges related to the firearm are anticipated.
