By Zoila Palma:  Miss Universe Belize Isabella Zabaneh has issued a statement denouncing all acts of domestic violence and says that this continues to “threaten the foundation of our homes and country at large. I am glad to see that he was removed from his post, because this requires a unified and firm response.”

“Men, and especially men who claim positions of leadership, YOU CANNOT BE SILENT. To lead is a responsibility, it requires restraint and respect. It is neither about control nor intimidation. And truly, anything less is simply put, a failure of character.

So to that young boy, who stepped in to defend his momma, you are more of a leader than that man who beat you will ever be. Your courage brought me to tears, and was both powerful and heartbreaking for me to watch. Because you should have never been put in that position in the first place. Your bravery is already at a level that many adults will never understand. That deserves acknowledging,” Miss Universe Belize expressed.

Zabaneh says that no woman should ever live in fear of the person who is meant to provide comfort and security.

“Your home should a place of peace, not pain. So to that lady, Ma’am I pray Gods guidance. Know that you have resources, and clearly a country full of people who see your situation and will come along side you. You deserve safety not violence. There is support whenever you are ready,” she added.

Zabaneh further urged all Belizeans to uphold standards of respect, accountability, kindness and compassion.

“Real strength protects. Real leadership takes responsibility. Anything less should not be tolerated. Those are the standards our country must uphold and insist upon,” she said.
