The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), through its Plant Health Department, recently hosted a delegation from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA APHIS) from April 13–18, 2026. The visit formed part of ongoing collaboration between BAHA and USDA APHIS to strengthen the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) control program in Belize and reinforce bilateral cooperation.

Throughout the week, the delegation engaged in technical and coordination meetings with BAHA and USDA representatives, focusing on program alignment, review of the 2026 work plan, and continued implementation of surveillance and control strategies. A key highlight of the visit was the formalization of a Letter of Understanding with the Moscamed Program, reinforcing regional collaboration and a shared commitment to safeguarding agricultural production.

Field activities were conducted in several locations, including Placencia, where the team observed trapping and outreach operations along the peninsula. The visit provided valuable insight into operational considerations for monitoring high-risk areas influenced by tourism and marine traffic. Additional activities included participation in trap recovery operations in Caye Caulker and San Pedro, offering the delegation a firsthand look at surveillance efforts in island environments.

This visit underscores the continued collaboration between BAHA and USDA APHIS in protecting Belize’s agricultural sector, maintaining pest-free status, and supporting the integrity of export markets.
