By Zoila Palma: April 20, widely known as “4/20” or Weed Day, is being marked today as an unofficial holiday celebrating marijuana culture across the United States, USA Today reports.
While not listed on most formal calendars, the date has become a popular occasion for cannabis users and advocates, often accompanied by food promotions and public gatherings.
The term “420” refers both to the date and to a broader cultural shorthand associated with marijuana use. Over time, it has also been adopted by activists who use the day to call for expanded legalization and decriminalization efforts in the United States and other countries.
Numerous theories have circulated about the origins of “420,” including claims that it relates to police codes, chemical compounds in cannabis, or references in music. However, the most widely accepted explanation traces back to a group of high school students in California during the early 1970s.
According to this account, five students at San Rafael High School in Marin County, known as the “Waldos,” would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. and used “420” as a code for smoking marijuana. The term later spread beyond their circle, gaining wider recognition through connections to the band Grateful Dead and its fan community.
The phrase entered mainstream awareness in the early 1990s after a flyer promoting a 4/20 gathering was circulated among fans and later published by High Times magazine.
Since then, April 20 has evolved into a global cultural observance.
