By Aaron Humes: A preliminary identification has been made of the body of Alwin Marin, Jr., 17, whose body was found by police and family members after 10 this morning in a remote area of ‘The Dike,’ located between Fabers Road, Jane Usher Boulevard and the Port of Belize Limited.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted on the partially decomposed body, which was identified as Marin solely by the clothing on it.
Marin and 18-year-old Jaheil Westby were last seen leaving to go fishing last week; Westby’s body was found last Friday morning with a gunshot wound.
This afternoon, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero of National Crimes Investigation Branch indicated that the deaths of Marin and Westby are being jointly investigated; police have detained several persons but made no arrests. As to motive, investigations suggest the pair had some issues with others over horses.
Asked why Marin’s body was found further away from that of Westby, Romero said, “That is what the scene is showing, that they both ran away from that area in separate directions.” He told us Marin’s body was found “in the bushes,” the search having been extended over several days, but could not confirm a specific distance.
Marin’s family has complained that police investigators theorized that he could have been in hiding; Romero insisted today that police always treated the two as missing persons together, now both potentially homicide victims.
