By Zoila Palma: Today, Pope Leo denounced a “handful of tyrants” he said are ravaging the world through war and exploitation, as he delivered a message of peace during a visit to the conflict-stricken city of Bamenda in Cameroon.
Speaking at the heart of one of the world’s most overlooked crises, the pontiff urged a shift away from violence and warned against the misuse of religion for political and economic gain.
The pope was greeted by jubilant crowds who filled the streets of Bamenda, celebrating his rare visit to the troubled region, AP reports.
During an interfaith peace meeting involving Christian and Muslim leaders and a traditional chief, Leo highlighted efforts to end years of bloodshed and care for victims of the separatist conflict that has plagued Cameroon’s Anglophone regions for nearly a decade.
Addressing worshippers at St. Joseph Cathedral, Leo praised the interfaith peace movement while cautioning against the manipulation of faith. “Blessed are the peacemakers! But woe to those who manipulate religion… for their own military, economic and political gain,” he said, adding that the world is being torn apart by a few powerful actors even as it is sustained by ordinary people working for peace.
Religious leaders echoed the suffering of the population, telling the pope that Bamenda’s soil “has drunk the blood” of many children.
