By Zoila Palma: Today, Pope Leo XIV pushed back after U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticized him, calling the first American leader of the Catholic Church “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.”
The pope, who has been outspoken about the U.S. and Israel’s war with Iran, said in an interview that he had “no fear” of the Trump administration and would continue advocating for peace based on the teachings of the gospel.
Trump made his remarks both to reporters and on social media, questioning the pope’s leadership and suggesting he supported crime.
Speaking late Sunday, Trump said he was “not a big fan” of the pontiff and criticized what he described as leniency on issues like crime and nuclear weapons. In an earlier post, he claimed the pope’s election was unexpected and implied it was influenced by his own presidency.
The pope responded while traveling Monday to Algeria as part of an 11-day tour across four African nations.
Speaking aboard the papal plane, he emphasized that his role is rooted in faith, not politics. He said the Church approaches global issues differently from political leaders but remains committed to promoting peace and reconciliation.
Despite Trump’s criticism, Pope Leo continued to speak out against the ongoing war with Iran. During his visit to Algiers, he warned against escalating global conflicts and urged leaders to avoid adding “resentment upon resentment.” He has previously condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure and called on world leaders and lawmakers to pursue peace.
