I am thrilled to have just received a copy of Chiqui Vicioso’s Julia de Burgos en Santo Domingo (Editorial Patria, 2018). Dominican poet, essayist, and playwright Sherezada “Chiqui” Vicioso has done extensive research on Puerto Rican poet Julia de Burgos, excavating valuable historical details about her activism, her connections with leading Dominican thinkers and political figures, and her “loves.” Here, Vicioso presents her own essays along with interviews with two men who were important in the poet’s artistic and intellectual trajectory: Juan Bosch and Juan Isidoro Jiménez Grullón.

Description (from Librería Isla): Julia de Burgos never set foot on Dominican soil, but her life was deeply intertwined with the Caribbean people from the sister island, bound to them by her activism in the anti-Trujillo struggle and her friendship with two of the Dominican Republic’s most prominent figures: Professor Juan Bosch and Dr. Juan Isidoro Jiménez Grullón, “the rival of the Río Grande de Loíza.”

This book is the fruit of its author’s—Chiqui Vicioso’s—love and dedication to sharing with the Dominican people the greatness of our [Puerto Rico’s] National Poet and her commitment to freedom, literature, and the well-being of the Dominican Republic, and, incidentally, to reinforce “the unbreakable ties that bind our two islands.”

Since 1983, Chiqui undertook the immense task of drawing the Dominican people’s attention to the figure of Julia de Burgos with her lecture “Julia de Burgos, Julia de vida” [Julia de Burgos, Julia of Life] and later, in 1987, she published her book, Julia de Burgos: La nuestra. This book includes the revealing and demystifying interviews that Chiqui conducted with Juan Bosch and Juan Isidoro Jiménez Grullón, which, due to their immeasurable historical value, we have included in this edition sponsored by Editorial Patria. Both interviews—and the other texts included here—greatly contribute to understanding the historical events surrounding Julia de Burgos at crucial moments in her life.
