The best Plan B is a good Plan A – Don’t get pregnant unless you mean it: You will now need a valid prescription for birth control as Ministry of Health crackdown continues

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Ministry of Health & Wellness has announced that contraceptives such as birth control pills, patches and injections will now require a current medical prescription from a doctor as the Ministry continues its crackdown on pharmaceutical sales without valid prescriptions.

“The Ministry of Health & Wellness reminds the public that certain contraceptives require a doctor’s prescription as part of a broader commitment to safety, proper use, and quality healthcare.

Contraceptive methods particularly hormonal options such as birth control pills, patches, and injections can have significant effects on the body. These methods are not one size fits all, and their safe use depends on an individual’s medical history and current health status,” the Ministry said in a late Thursday evening press release.

The announcement follows moves to enforce stricter compliance measures through the Drug Inspectorate Unit (DIU) requiring to request valid prescriptions before dispensing select medication. The crackdown has raised concern among pharmacists who have reported to other media that such measures may negatively impact their businesses.

Some pharmacists have reportedly noted alleged inconsistencies in the policy, noting that customers would need a prescription simply to buy 800mg ibuprofen. The DIU, meanwhile, says the measures are not new; and that the Government is simply moving to enforce existing regulations.
